How to Render Video Files in Premiere Pro When working with larger files in Adobe Premiere Pro, you may encounter hiccups during playback of a project in progress. This issue is common when dealing with high-resolution media and/or when video effects are applied. In this quick Premiere Pro CS6 tutorial, I go over the basics of using the new Toggle Full Screen feature. This feature lets you quickly toggle your primary or secondary monitor to become a full screen display for the video you are editing.


How to Render Video Files in Premiere Pro
When working with larger files in Adobe Premiere Pro, you may encounter hiccups during playback of a project in progress. This issue is common when dealing with high-resolution media and/or when video effects are applied. One solution is to prerender video previews, or cached media files that remain on your hard disk. These instructions will teach you how to render a video in Premiere Pro and reduce the strain on your system during preview playback.
When to Render Video
Most users can identify when playback’s not as smooth as it should be, but Premiere features tools to eliminate the guesswork. In the upper-right corner of the Program Monitor, click the “Options” icon and activate “Show Dropped Frames Indicator”. This will display data to the left of your Zoom Level menu in the form of a green or yellow dot. Green means playback is performing properly; yellow denotes dropped frames (hover your cursor over the icon for an exact number).
The Timeline also displays helpful information regarding playback performance. Thin colored bars running along the tops of your video clips indicate one of four scenarios:
  • Red: Rendered previews do not exist for the clips positioned below. Premiere will attempt to render on the fly, but playback quality or smoothness will likely suffer.
  • Yellow: Same as above, though Premiere may be able to provide fluid playback without rendering a preview.
  • Green: Rendered previews already exist; playback should not suffer.
  • None: A lack of colored bars denotes clips without rendered previews; playback is expected to remain smooth due to lack of intensive rendering.

How to Render Video
Learning how to render a video in Premiere Pro is quick and easy. Start by marking In and Out points to designate a specific range to be rendered (skip if you wish to render your entire timeline):
  • Position the Current Time Indicator (CTI) where you wish to begin rendering.
  • Pull down the “Marker” menu and click “Mark In” (shortcut: “I”).
  • Repeat the above for the desired ending position, but choose “Mark Out” from the pull-down menu (shortcut: “O”).

Next, pull down the “Sequence” menu and choose “Render In to Out”. A window will display the operation’s progress and expected time remaining. Once it has completed, your project or selection will be rendered, indicated by green bars on the Timeline.

Okay, today we are fixing, solving or getting around a problem which occurs sometimes you are editing with Premiere: the BLACK SCREEN issue. The output screen just goes black and you are not able to get it back, unless you restart the program or do some things (which I’m gonna talk about soon). Isn’t that frustrating when you are in the middle of the craziest edit of your life and the output screen just goes black. Uh.. oh.

How to the Fix BLACK SCREEN problem on Premiere

Well, here you learn how to fix the issue on Adobe Premiere Pro. In the tutorial video above, I’m showing you one way to get around this black screen problem and I also talk about the possible reasons why this happens so hopefully you understand this issue a little bit more. After this Temporary FIX you have the possibility to continue to work with your project — you don’t have to close the program and start over.

Fixing the problem:

  1. Go to Premiere top bar and -> FILE
  2. Project Settings -> General
  3. Change the “Renderer” to -> the default option which is the “Mercury Playback Engine Software Only” or other option (that you might have)
  4. And voila, it should be fixed!
  5. You should see your output monitor again

After that you should see your Playback screen (the output screen) again and should be able to continue working. Of course doing editing with only the “Software only” -option on it’s a little bit slower. Hope this helps you!

Possible reasons why this black screen happens

Like I say in the video, you don’t know for sure what’s causing the black screen problem, but I can assume some things here:

  • Slow computer, lack of computer processing power
  • The parts and components of your computer are not best possible way compatible with the Adobe Premiere / or CUDA
  • Too big editing project for you computer / or CUDA to handle
  • Some other reason, please tell if you know
